A kind note and the publication of this book came during the pandemic and provided a focus that wasn’t just outside of what was happening but also a way of remembering what fear does to us, and how the nonstop dialogue with self (the default mode network in neurology) is part of what makes us who we are, it’s part of consciousness, it’s what the brain does when we’re not doing something.

One of the best things about hiking the same trail over and over for a summer is that you get to know some of the aspects of that particular trail, the root knot that’s polished from all the boots, the big swash of purple blooms, the switchbacks were you can see the ocean and so on.

I never felt like I was naturally good at fiction because I was trying to write, “good fiction,” instead of asking myself if there was a story that I actually wanted to tell and thank goodness for the people who write about unpacking the idea and the history of, “good fiction,” to begin with.
